Surviving the first day of preschool
The first day of school can be difficult for both the parent and the child. A good day starts the night before. Be sure to have your child’s backpack waiting by the door, ready for the next morning. Also, having your child’s outfit laid out is helpful. Let your child participate in these activities. Taking part in the preparation can increase his/her desire to go to preschool. Make it a point for both you and your child to get a good night’s sleep.
Before leaving home, talk to your child about what is going to happen. Be as specific as you can. It’s normal for your child to be nervous and even reluctant. Change is scary at any age. No matter what you are feeling, stay positive. Your child can sense what you are feeling. If you are nervous or scared, your child may believe that he or she also should be scared.
Once you arrive at school, remember that crying is a normal reaction. Most likely, your child will not be the only one responding in this way. Although it will be difficult, it is best to let the teacher handle the situation. Be sure to say goodbye. Later, when you pick your child up, chances are that he or she will have had a great day.
