Smart stepparenting tips
Becoming a stepparent can be a difficult adjustment. Here are some steps to help you establish the new relationship.
- Realize that adjusting to a new situation takes time.
- Communication is key. Talk to your spouse about any problems and try to figure out the best way to handle them.
- Be a friend to the stepchild. Recognize the fact that you are a stepparent and your bond will be different than that of the biological parent.
- Lend a patient ear to the child. Chances are that the more you listen, the better he or she will feel, and the faster you will be accepted.
- Insecurity may be a reason for the reluctance to accept the stepparent. You need to reassure stepchildren, through your words and actions, that you are not trying to steal their father or mother from them.
- Take up a hobby both you and the child enjoy. This way you will spend quality time together.
- Follow the rules of the relationship. Never speak negatively about the other parent.
- Show interest in their daily activities. Ask how they are performing in school, what they are doing after school, their hobbies at home, etc.
- Lastly, be prepared to face hard times with the child. Be patient. Remember, there is no magic love potion that will make the child instantly love and accept you.
